Gunnison County Marriage License Guide

Everything you need to know about legally tying the knot in Crested Butte, Mt. Crested Butte, Gunnison, or anywhere in the Rocky Mountains.

What is Self-Solemnization?

Colorado is one of only a few states in the country that recognizes Self-Solemnization (C.R.S. 14-2-109). This means that you and your partner can legally marry yourselves without the presence or signature of an ordained minister, judge, officiant, or any witnesses!

Many couples who elope on remote mountain passes or wildflower trails choose to sign their own license, and some even have their beloved dog stamp a paw print on the witness line as a memorable keepsake.

Key Legal Requirements

  • Age: Both parties must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Valid Government ID: Both parties must present a valid passport, driver's license, or state identification card.
  • Fee: The statutory fee is $30.00 (cash or check preferred).
  • No Blood Test or Waiting Period: Colorado does not require blood tests, and there is zero waiting period—you can get married the exact same day you pick up your license!
  • Validity Window: Your marriage license must be used within 35 days of issuance anywhere within the state of Colorado.
  • Return Requirement: The completed license must be returned to the Gunnison County Clerk and Recorder's Office within 63 days following the ceremony.
